Baramati: Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu has stated that poor visibility was a key factor when the plane carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed near Baramati airport on Wednesday morning. The incident claimed five lives, including Pawar, two pilots, a flight attendant, and his personal security officer.
The chartered Learjet 46, operated by VSR Ventures, departed Mumbai at 8:10 am and lost radar contact at 8:45 am. The aircraft crash-landed near Baramati around 8:50 am.

According to preliminary reports, the pilot initially reported to air traffic control (ATC) that the runway was not visible and executed a go-around. During the second landing attempt, the pilot confirmed runway visibility before the plane tragically crashed. Witnesses described the aircraft as “unstable in the air,” tilting before hitting the ground and triggering a series of explosions.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) along with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has arrived at the crash site. The AAIB will examine flight recorders, aircraft systems, crew records, and ATC communications to determine the exact cause.
The tragedy has prompted opposition leaders to demand a Supreme Court-monitored investigation. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for a probe, citing concerns that existing agencies may be “compromised.” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also supported the call, emphasizing the need for an impartial inquiry.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced three days of state mourning, with the national flag at half-mast and a halt on official entertainment programs. January 28 has been declared a state holiday, closing all government and BMC offices. Pawar’s last rites will be held at Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati on January 29 at 11 am with full state honours.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Pawar’s “untimely demise,” praising his grassroots connection and dedication to empowering the poor.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, President Droupadi Murmu, and senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi also conveyed condolences. Fadnavis described Pawar’s death as a personal loss, highlighting his steadfast leadership and contributions to Maharashtra’s development.
