New Delhi: India on Thursday restrained from commenting on the remarks by US President Donald Trump that described the country in derogatory terms.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it had taken note of the development but refrained from further comment. “We have seen some reports. That’s where I will leave it,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media briefing.

The brief statement signalled a deliberate attempt by the government to avoid escalation despite the sensitive nature of the issue.

Origin of the Controversy

The controversy began after Trump reposted content from Michael Savage’s podcast Savage Nation. In the material, Savage criticised the United States’ birthright citizenship policy and referred to countries such as India and China using offensive language.

In a letter accompanying the podcast, Savage also made sweeping allegations about immigrants, drawing criticism for stereotyping and inflammatory rhetoric. Trump shared both the video and its transcript, while backing calls for a national referendum on birthright citizenship in the United States.

Political Reactions in India

The remarks quickly triggered reactions within India’s political landscape. The Congress party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue formally with Washington, calling the statements “deeply offensive.”

In its response, the opposition accused the government of not responding strongly enough to repeated comments from Trump in the past. The issue has added a political dimension to what is otherwise a diplomatic matter.

Diplomatic Sensitivity

India and the United States share strong strategic and economic ties, making public responses to such controversies particularly sensitive. The MEA’s restrained tone suggests an effort to manage the situation through diplomatic channels rather than public confrontation.

Analysts note that such incidents often test the balance between domestic political pressure and international diplomacy, especially when remarks originate from influential global figures.
