New Delhi: Pakistan claims that India used Brahmos missiles in the last skirmishes between India and Pakistan.
This missile is not only the pride of India but also a milestone for the world. It was jointly developed in collaboration with DRDO of India and NPO of Russia. The name BrahMos is derived from the confluence of the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, which symbolizes the Indo-Russian partnership.
BrahMos was first inducted into the Indian Navy in 2005, then the Indian Army in 2007, and its air-launched version was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2019 through the SU-30MKI. Today BrahMos has become a trusted weapon for every force.
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that travels at a speed of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.5. This means it is three times faster than sound. Once launched, it reaches its target in a matter of minutes, and the enemy does not get time to react.
When Brahmos was launched, its range was 290 km, but after the MTCR (Missile Technology Control Regime) agreement, its range has increased from 500 km to 800 km. In the future, Brahmos-2 is going to come, which will be hypersonic, and its range will be up to 1500 km, which will prove to be a game changer.
Another feature that makes BrahMos special is its multi-platform compatibility. It can be launched from a land-based launchpad, from a naval ship, from a submarine, and from an SU-30MKI fighter jet.
A special version is ready for each platform, so you can launch it from anywhere. The warhead of this missile is a high explosive or semi-armor-piercing type of 200 to 300 kg. When it hits the target at such a high speed, there is not only an explosion but also the effect of kinetic energy, which completely destroys the target.
The speed of Brahmos is so fast that its time to reach the target is very short, and it does not give the target a chance to escape even for a second. Its circular error probable (CEP) is only 1 meter; that is, it hits its target within 1 meter. Such accuracy is rarely found even in any guided bomb.
It is a fire-and-forget missile, which means that once launched, it guides itself; the operator does not need to do anything.
Different variants of BrahMos are available. Such as:
Block 1 (first version)—For Indian Army and Navy.
SU-30MKI air-launched version.
ER (Extended Range)—Range up to 500 km.
BrahMos NG (Next Generation)—a lighter version that can easily fit in fighter jets.
BrahMos-2—the upcoming hypersonic missile, which will travel at speeds of up to Mach 8.
Export plans for BrahMos have also begun, with the Philippines becoming its first customer.
BrahMos is not just a missile but a strategic game changer. It has taken India's defense capability to the global level. Fast, accurate, stealthy, and powerful, BrahMos is one of the most advanced missile systems in the world.
