Assistant Electoral Registration Officer
Kolkata: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami and his brother, Mohammed Kaif, have been summoned by the Election Commission as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a media report said. Fresh notices were issued after Shami failed to appear at an earlier scheduled hearing.
Both individuals have been asked to present themselves before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) in Kolkata. Shami is registered as a voter in Ward No. 93 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which comes under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency.
Election Commission sources said the names of Shami and his brother appeared on the hearing list due to discrepancies found in their voter enumeration forms. These inconsistencies prompted election officials to seek clarification through a formal hearing.
Shami’s appearance has now been scheduled between January 9 and January 11, during which officials will review the details related to his voter registration.
The SIR process, which began on December 16 last year, aims to verify and update electoral records. However, the exercise has drawn criticism from political leaders. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee previously raised concerns over the lack of clear and uniform guidelines for the revision process across states.
In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Banerjee alleged that timelines were being changed arbitrarily, highlighting what she described as gaps in clarity, preparedness, and procedural consistency.
