Will Delhi See Heavy Rainfall Today? Rain, Thunderstorms Likely In 12 States

A powerful weather system over the Bay of Bengal is set to change conditions across northern India. Delhi is likely to witness rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds as IMD places 12 states under alert.

New Delhi: Residents of Delhi-NCR are experiencing a noticeable change in weather over the next two days as a strong low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal influences conditions across northern India.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Capital may witness intermittent rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds, bringing temporary relief from humid conditions while increasing the risk of localised disruptions.

Rain and Strong Winds Expected

The IMD has forecast cloudy skies with periods of light to moderate rainfall across Delhi. Thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of up to 65 kmph are possible in some areas. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully, as heavy showers during peak hours could lead to traffic congestion and waterlogging on low-lying roads.

12 States Under Weather Alert

The weather system is expected to impact at least 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Odisha. The widespread rainfall is likely to be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several regions.

Odisha on Red Alert, Assam Flood Situation Continues

While Delhi is expected to receive moderate rainfall, Odisha remains the worst-affected state. The IMD has issued a Red Alert for several districts due to the possibility of extremely heavy rain and flash flooding. In Assam, persistent rainfall has worsened flood conditions, with overflowing rivers affecting villages and forcing many residents to move to safer locations.

Safety Advisory for Residents

Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms and stay away from open fields, tall trees and electric poles when lightning activity is reported. Fishermen along the eastern coast have also been advised not to venture into the sea because of rough conditions and strong winds.
