Kolkata: The newly formed BJP government in West Bengal, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, announced a series of major policy decisions during its first cabinet meeting on Sunday.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Adhikari said the government was committed to delivering development through what he described as a “double-engine government” model.
The cabinet approved the process for transferring land to the Border Security Force for fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. Officials have been directed to complete the land transfer process within 45 days.

The move is being viewed as one of the BJP government’s priority security initiatives after assuming office in the state.
One of the key decisions taken during the first cabinet meeting was the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal.
The Centre’s flagship health insurance programme had remained unavailable in the state under the previous administration. The new BJP government said the scheme would now be rolled out to extend healthcare coverage benefits to lakhs of families across Bengal.
The cabinet announced social security assistance and government support for families allegedly impacted by political violence in recent years.
“The government will take full responsibility for such families,” The CM said. He further added that the government acknowledged the deaths of 321 BJP workers during the party’s political movement in the state and would initiate investigations if the affected families seek legal action.
The government announced immediate implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the state. The cabinet also decided to allow IAS and IPS officers from West Bengal to participate in central training programmes.
In another significant decision, the government approved a five-year extension in state government jobs.
Officials indicated that more administrative changes and restructuring exercises are likely in the coming weeks as the new government settles into office.
