Mahua Moitra calls 19 TMC MPs ‘traitors’ (Img: Internet)
Kolkata: Tensions within the Trinamool Congress have escalated after party MP Mahua Moitra launched a sharp attack on 19 dissident MPs who have reportedly extended support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Moitra called the group “traitors” and demanded that they resign and seek a fresh mandate from voters.
In a post on social media platform X, Moitra rejected arguments that the rebel MPs could avoid disqualification under anti-defection provisions. She cited constitutional provisions, arguing that the 91st Amendment removed the scope for a split within a party and that only a formal merger with another political outfit would be valid under law.

She insisted that the size of the breakaway group was irrelevant and maintained that the MPs should resign and contest again, this time under a BJP ticket if they wished to support the ruling alliance.
The controversy follows a letter submitted by a group of 19 TMC MPs, reportedly led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In the communication, the MPs informed the Speaker of their support for the NDA and raised questions regarding the party’s internal organisational structure in Parliament.
The group has argued that changes in parliamentary roles, including the appointment of a new Chief Whip, were not formally updated in official records, leading to procedural ambiguity.
Some of the dissenting MPs have defended their position, citing concerns over governance in West Bengal and alleging irregularities. Speaking to media outlets, they claimed the situation in the state had been deteriorating and required urgent political attention.

In a separate interview, Moitra alleged that the BJP was attempting to increase its parliamentary strength through defections rather than electoral victories. She accused the ruling party of encouraging political instability by targeting opposition MPs.
She further asserted that the rebel lawmakers owed their electoral victories to the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and said the party’s identity remained firmly tied to the West Bengal Chief Minister.
The internal dispute has emerged as one of the most significant challenges for the TMC in recent times, with growing public dissent among MPs highlighting fractures within the party’s parliamentary wing.
