Why did Shashi Tharoor skip a key Congress meeting in Delhi while PM Modi campaigned in Kerala? From protocol snubs to political buzz, his absence has sparked fresh questions inside the party.
Tharoor's absence sparked a buzz that he was upset with Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday skipped a crucial meeting convened by the Congress high command in Delhi to discuss preparations for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. His absence immediately triggered speculation within political circles, with reports suggesting that Tharoor was unhappy with the party leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi.
Initial sources indicated that Tharoor felt “insulted” during a recent Congress Mahapanchayat in Kochi and had therefore chosen to stay away from the Delhi meeting. However, party sources later clarified that Tharoor had sought and received permission from the high command to remain in Kerala.
Congress doesn’t think this way: Party leader on Shashi Tharoor’s remarks praising PM Modi
According to Congress sources, Tharoor decided to stay back in his parliamentary constituency, Thiruvananthapuram, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a major roadshow and public rally on Friday.
The leadership reportedly agreed that his presence in the constituency was important, given the political significance of the Prime Minister’s visit. The clarification came amid growing buzz that internal dissatisfaction had influenced Tharoor’s decision to skip the meeting.
Earlier reports suggested that Tharoor was upset over how he was treated during the Congress Mahapanchayat held in Kochi, which was attended by Rahul Gandhi. Sources claimed that confusion over seating arrangements and the speaking order led to a perceived public slight against Tharoor.
Tharoor was reportedly informed that only Rahul Gandhi would speak after him, but several other party leaders later addressed the gathering. Observers also noted that Rahul Gandhi did not mention Tharoor by name during his speech, despite Tharoor’s seniority and stature within the party. The episode reportedly added to Tharoor’s dissatisfaction with both the state and central leadership.
‘Congress needs discipline’, Says Shashi Tharoor amid Party row
The Congress has not issued an official statement addressing reports of Tharoor’s discomfort or the internal protocol issues at the Kochi event. Party insiders, however, maintain that there is no rift and that Tharoor’s absence from the Delhi meeting was approved in advance.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a massive roadshow in Thiruvananthapuram, launching several development initiatives. These included the PM SVANidhi Credit Card, disbursal of loans to one lakh beneficiaries, and the flagging off of four new train services.
Addressing a rally, Modi strongly criticized both the Congress and the Left over corruption and urged voters to give the NDA an opportunity in the upcoming Assembly elections, ending his speech with a rare English appeal for a “Viksit Keralam.”
