TVK Chief Vijay Shakes the Foundations of Dravidian Politics in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: In an unprecedented turn of events, Tamil Nadu's political landscape has been reshaped as actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy’s Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) storms to a stunning victory, breaking the decades-long dominance of Dravidian parties. Founded just two years ago in 2024, the TVK has won 107 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections, leaving traditional powerhouses DMK and AIADMK in the dust.
For nearly six decades, Tamil Nadu politics was defined by the rivalry between DMK and AIADMK. This election, however, marked a dramatic shift. The DMK's tally shrank to 60 seats, while AIADMK was reduced to 47. Political analysts suggest this may signal the decline of Dravidian dominance in the state.
The election delivered a historic upset in the Kolathur constituency, where Chief Minister MK Stalin was defeated by TVK candidate V.S. Basu by a margin of 8,795 votes-a symbolic blow to the DMK.
Vijay Thalapathy, a beloved actor with over 68 films to his name, leveraged his mass appeal and image as a champion against corruption and injustice. Hits like Thuppakki, Kaththi, and Sarkar showcased him as a defender of the people, translating cinematic popularity into political momentum.
Vijay’s personal intervention following the tragic 2025 Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives, reinforced his image as a leader who connects with the people, enhancing his credibility and public support.
The TVK dominated urban centers, winning all 16 seats in Chennai and major victories in Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy. AIADMK retained a foothold in rural areas but could not match TVK’s urban surge.
Campaign pledges such as 10 grams of gold and ₹1 lakh financial assistance for daughters of underprivileged families struck a chord with youth and women voters, contributing significantly to the party's historic win.
The 2026 elections resulted in a hung assembly, with no single party achieving a majority. While TVK leads with 107 seats, coalition-building will be crucial. Analysts say this may mark the dawn of a new era in Tamil Nadu politics, signaling the rise of new forces and the waning influence of traditional Dravidian parties.
