Tamil Nadu Polls: Congress announces 27 candidates list; Fields key leaders across constituencies

Chennai: The Indian National Congress on Friday released its list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, nominating its state president K Selvaperunthagai from the Sriperumbudur constituency.

Selvaperunthagai, who represented the same seat in the previous election, had secured a victory over an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate by a margin of around 11,000 votes.

Key Candidates in the Fray

Among the prominent names, senior leader Durai Chandrasekar has been renominated from the Ponneri constituency, which he currently represents as an MLA.

The party has also fielded:

  • A Chella Kumar from Krishnagiri
  • JMH Aassan Maulaana from Velachery
  • AM Munirathinam from Sholingur
  • R Kuppu Saamy from Uthangarai
  • Seat-Sharing Under DMK-Led Alliance

The Congress is part of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), headed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. As per the seat-sharing arrangement, the DMK will contest 164 out of the 234 seats and has already announced its full list of candidates.

Congress, the alliance’s principal partner, has been allocated 28 constituencies.

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (led by Premalatha Vijayakanth) - 10 seats
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (led by Thol Thirumavalavan) - 8 seats
Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) - 5 seats each
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (led by Vaiko) - 4 seats
Indian Union Muslim League and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi - 2 seats each
Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi and Social Democratic Party of India - 1 seat each
Election Schedule

Polling for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will take place in a single phase on April 23, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
