Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government on Friday expanded its cabinet, inducting five legislators as ministers in a move viewed as strategically important ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Governor Gurmit Singh administered the oath of office to the newly inducted ministers at a formal ceremony.

The newly appointed ministers include Ram Singh Kaida (Bhimtal), Khajan Das (Rajpur), Madan Kaushik (Haridwar), Pradeep Batra (Roorkee), and Bharat Singh Chaudhary (Rudraprayag).

Their inclusion fills long-pending vacancies in the cabinet led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Vacancies Filled After Long Gap

Five ministerial positions had remained vacant for some time. Three of these posts were unfilled following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s return to power in 2022.

Two additional vacancies arose after the death of minister Chandan Ram Das in 2023 and the resignation of Premchand Aggarwal in March 2025. The latest expansion brings the cabinet closer to its full strength.

Political Significance Ahead of Elections

The move comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections, where it aims to secure a third consecutive term in the state.

Political observers believe the expansion is designed to strengthen the party’s organisational base and improve its electoral prospects.

Balancing Regional and Caste Equations

Experts suggest that the selection of ministers reflects an attempt to balance regional representation and caste dynamics, both of which play a crucial role in Uttarakhand’s politics.

The inclusion of leaders from different constituencies is expected to enhance the government’s outreach and governance efforts at the grassroots level.

Boost to Party Organisation

The cabinet expansion is also seen as a step to accommodate senior party members and address internal demands for representation. Several MLAs had reportedly been seeking ministerial positions.

With the new appointments, the government is expected to focus on strengthening administrative efficiency and political coordination in the run-up to the next elections.
