Chennai: The remnants of Cyclone Ditwah, now a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, have triggered extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu, prompting a red alert in several districts including Chennai and Tiruvallur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the warning for both Chennai and Tiruvallur on Tuesday, signaling potential disruptions due to intense rainfall and strong winds. The weather system is located over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, near the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

According to the IMD, the center of the deep depression is approximately 35 km from the north Tamil Nadu- Puducherry coasts. Officials have forecast that the system is likely to recurve southwestwards and weaken into a depression within the next 12 hours.

Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain Continues

Chennai is expected to experience unsettled weather in the coming days. On December 3, the city will see a generally cloudy sky with heavy rainfall, with daytime temperatures around 29°C and nighttime temperatures near 24°C.

From December 4 onwards, the skies are likely to remain partly cloudy, but there is a continued risk of moderate rain and thunderstorms, often accompanied by lightning.

The forecast indicates that this weather pattern may persist through December 5, 6, and 7, with daytime temperatures stabilizing around 30°C and nighttime temperatures ranging between 25°C and 26°C. Meteorologists have advised residents to remain vigilant and follow updates from the IMD and local authorities.

Schools and Colleges Shut as Precaution

In light of the severe weather, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram will remain closed on December 2. District authorities announced the precautionary closure late on Monday, citing the need to ensure student safety amid the risk of intense rainfall and waterlogging.

District collectors confirmed that all educational institutions in the three districts would observe a holiday. Residents have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors where possible, and adhere strictly to advisories issued by the state government and disaster management agencies.

Authorities Urge Caution

State disaster management officials continue to monitor the deep depression closely. Citizens are advised to take precautions, secure property, and stay updated with official advisories.

The IMD has stressed that the system, although expected to weaken into a depression soon, can still bring heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and strong winds that may disrupt daily life in coastal and low-lying areas.
