Flights Cancelled, Rail Services Hit Due To Cyclone Ditwah
Chennai: Cyclone Ditwah caused massive devastation in Sri Lanka, triggering floods and landslides. The storm is now moving across the Bay of Bengal towards the southern coastal states of India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Ditwah is active in the southwest Bay of Bengal and near the Tamil Nadu/Puducherry coasts.

Cyclone Ditwah triggers red alert in Tamil Nadu; IMD warns of heavy rain
Chennai Airport has canceled 54 flights due to the storm's potential. This decision was made due to the risks associated with strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surge. Passengers have been advised to postpone their travel for the time being or confirm the situation with the airline.
Not just flights, rail services have also been affected. Southern Railway has changed the schedules of several trains, citing the storm, and some have been cancelled or diverted to short distances. Relief and rescue teams (NDRF/SDRF) have been activated to ensure rapid emergency response.
Schools and colleges have been closed in affected coastal districts, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh. Local administrations in many districts have already set up relief camps and issued instructions to relocate residents to safer locations and ensure electricity and drinking water supply.
Rescue teams (NDRF/SDRF) have been deployed in coastal and vulnerable areas. Officials have urged people to avoid unnecessary venturing outside their homes and to avoid the sea, beaches, or ports along the coast.
