Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has approved a major initiative to upgrade 800 government schools across the state into modern Karnataka Public Schools, with a total outlay of Rs 3,200 crore. As part of the project, Rs 18 crore has been sanctioned for identifying an agency to prepare detailed school-wise project reports. The project aims to transform government schools into centers of quality education while providing state-of-the-art facilities for students from pre-primary to pre-university levels.

Project Approval and Funding

The Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, approved the selection of an agency to prepare Detailed Project Reports for the schools. The project will be executed with assistance from the Asian Development Bank and other funding agencies. Of the 800 schools, 474 will receive support from ADB, 200 will be funded through the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board, and 100 schools will receive funds from the Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Corporation.

The total estimated expenditure of Rs 3,200 crore will cover modernization costs ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 4 crore per school. Approximately Rs 2,500 crore will be spent to upgrade 500 schools with ADB support, while Rs 700 crore will come from KKRDB and KMERC funds.

Objectives of Karnataka Public Schools

The Karnataka Public Schools project aims to improve student enrolment and reduce dropout rates by providing high-quality education and facilities under one roof. The project focuses on creating an optimal learning environment in rural and backward areas. Each upgraded school will accommodate a threshold of 1,200 students, offering pre-primary to pre-university classes with modern amenities.

The Cabinet noted that providing quality physical infrastructure, including well-equipped classrooms, laboratories, libraries, playgrounds, and computer facilities, will enhance the overall educational environment. Schools will also introduce STEAM education, 21st-century skills, and training for teachers to improve learning outcomes.

Focus on Quality Learning and Teacher Training

Beyond infrastructure, the project emphasizes high-quality learning tools, digital resources, and teacher training programs. By combining modern facilities with improved teaching methods, the initiative seeks to transform government schools into centers of excellence. Students are expected to benefit from enhanced academic resources, extracurricular facilities, and a safer, more engaging learning environment.

Impact on Students and Communities

The upgradation of 800 schools is expected to have a lasting impact on students, families, and communities. By providing comprehensive education from early childhood to higher secondary levels, the Karnataka Public Schools will help bridge the gap in educational access and quality. The initiative will particularly benefit students in rural and underdeveloped regions, offering them opportunities comparable to private and urban schools.

Through this ambitious project, Karnataka aims to establish a model for public education that combines modern infrastructure, skilled teachers, and innovative learning tools. By addressing both academic and holistic development, the Karnataka Public Schools initiative promises to reshape the educational landscape of the state while ensuring sustainable growth and equitable learning opportunities for future generations.
