Tamil Nadu Polls: BJP releases list of 27 candidates, Tamilisai Soundararajan to contest from Mylapore

The BJP has unveiled its first list of 27 candidates for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, fielding Tamilisai Soundararajan from Mylapore and blending experienced leaders with new faces to expand its footprint in the state.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its first list of 27 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election 2026, marking an early start to its electoral campaign in the state.

Tamilisai Soundararajan to Contest from Mylapore

One of the most prominent names in the list is Tamilisai Soundararajan, who has been fielded from the high-profile Mylapore constituency in Chennai. Her candidature is expected to strengthen the party’s presence in the urban belt and attract significant political attention.

Other notable candidates include M. Rajasimha Mahindra from Avadi, Dr. Nagesh Kumar from Thalli, and C. Elumalai from Tiruvannamalai. The party has also retained familiar faces such as Vanathi Srinivasan, who will contest from Coimbatore (North).

Representation Across Regions and Communities

The BJP’s list reflects a mix of experienced leaders and new entrants, with representation across different regions of Tamil Nadu. Candidates have been announced for constituencies in western, southern, and delta regions, indicating a broad-based strategy.

The party has also fielded candidates in reserved constituencies, including Rasipuram (SC), Avanashi (SC), and Manamadurai (SC). Leaders such as Dr. S.D. Premkumar and L. Murugan are among those contesting from these segments.

In southern Tamil Nadu, the BJP has nominated candidates like Prof. Raama Sreenivasan from Madurai South and Nainar Nagendran from Sattur, signalling a push to expand its footprint in areas traditionally dominated by regional parties.

Focus on Southern and Coastal Constituencies

The party has also paid attention to coastal and southernmost constituencies. Candidates such as R.M. Gandhi from Nagercoil, T. Sivakumar from Colachel, and S. Vijayadharani from Vilavancode have been included in the list.

These selections indicate an attempt by the BJP to consolidate support in Kanyakumari district and nearby regions, where it has shown pockets of electoral strength in recent years. The announcement was issued by Arun Singh, BJP National General Secretary and headquarters in-charge.
