Chennai braces for a wet weekend as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal threatens heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Will Thursday’s showers be just a prelude to the downpour hitting the city on Saturday and Sunday?
Coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to get more rain on Thursday
Chennai: Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive more rainfall on Thursday, according to the latest weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast comes amid evolving weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal that are expected to intensify rainfall activity over the weekend.
As per the IMD, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region on Thursday. In Chennai, the skies are likely to remain partly cloudy, with occasional spells of rain possible during the day.
Meanwhile, interior Tamil Nadu is expected to experience dry weather, offering temporary relief to inland districts.
Severe cold grips Delhi-UP; Here’s the weather update from other states
Weather officials said temperatures in Chennai are likely to remain moderate. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 23 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels, however, are expected to remain high due to the prevailing moisture in the atmosphere.
The IMD stated that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining East Equatorial Indian Ocean has led to the formation of a low-pressure area. This system is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal by Wednesday.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring the system as it is expected to influence weather patterns along the Tamil Nadu coast over the next few days.
Due to the developing weather system, Chennai and its adjoining districts are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday (December 10). The IMD has also warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may occur in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is expected to continue on Sunday, prompting the weather department to issue a heavy rain warning for both days. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The IMD has urged fishermen to avoid venturing into rough sea areas and advised the public to stay updated with official weather bulletins. Civic authorities are expected to remain on alert to manage any rain-related disruptions.
With a wet weekend forecast, residents of Chennai may need to plan their travel and outdoor activities carefully as the city braces for another spell of monsoon showers.
