New Delhi: Tensions are escalating between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh has refused to play its T20 World Cup matches in India, citing security reasons, and has also written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) in this regard. After a prolonged silence, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has now responded to the matter.

When and Where Are Bangladesh's Matches to Be Held?

The T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on February 7th. Bangladesh is scheduled to play four matches in India in the group stage of the tournament, with three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. However, the BCB is adamant that all these matches be played in Sri Lanka.

Controversy Over Mustafizur Rahman

The root of this entire controversy lies in the IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) purchased Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore in the mini-auction. However, following BCCI instructions, KKR had to release him. Protests against Mustafizur's presence in India intensified, with several politicians and social organizations targeting KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan.

BCB writes second letter to ICC

Bangladesh took a tough stance after Mustafizur was excluded from the IPL. On Thursday, the BCB wrote to the ICC for the second time, expressing concerns about security in India and reiterating its demand to move its matches to Sri Lanka. However, no final decision has been taken by the ICC on this matter yet.

BCCI did not give much importance to this matter

The BCCI has currently adopted a balanced approach on this issue. After the meeting in Mumbai, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clearly stated that the demand for Bangladesh not to play in India was not part of the meeting. He stated that this matter does not fall under his jurisdiction and that only the ICC has the authority to make all decisions related to the T20 World Cup.

IPL broadcast also banned

Following Mustafizur's exclusion, Bangladesh took a tough stance against India and even banned the broadcast of the IPL in the country. This decision has also disappointed cricket fans.

All eyes now on ICC's decision

At present, the entire matter hinges on the ICC's decision. It will be interesting to see whether Bangladesh's demand is met or if their matches will be played in India as scheduled.
