New Delhi: The T20 World Cup 2026 clash between South Africa and Afghanistan turned into one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament, with the result ultimately decided in a second Super Over. In a contest packed with twists, no-balls, free hits, and last-ball heroics, fans witnessed a game that could easily be described as the most exciting encounter of this edition so far.

Afghanistan’s Gritty Chase of 188

Chasing a challenging target of 188 runs, Afghanistan displayed remarkable determination and fearless batting. Throughout the match, the momentum kept shifting, and at no point did it feel like one team had complete control. Every over added fresh tension, and every ball carried the possibility of turning the game on its head.

As the match reached its climax, Afghanistan needed 13 runs in the final over with nine wickets already down. With only one wicket in hand, the odds were clearly against them. Noor Ahmad was on strike, and South Africa entrusted Kagiso Rabada with the crucial final over.

On the very first ball, Noor Ahmad was caught, and it appeared that South Africa had sealed the victory. However, the drama was far from over — the delivery was declared a no-ball. Instead of ending the contest, this decision reopened the door for Afghanistan.

Chaos in the Final Over

The no-ball was followed by a wide and then a dot ball, increasing the pressure. But Noor Ahmad responded brilliantly, smashing a six off the next legal delivery. Another dot ball followed, but then he managed to take two runs. Adding to the tension, that delivery was also ruled a no-ball.

Suddenly, Afghanistan required just 2 runs from 3 balls. With a free hit in play — meaning the batter could not be dismissed by bowled or caught — victory seemed within reach. However, in a dramatic twist, Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out while attempting the second run. The game was tied, pushing the match into a Super Over.

First Super Over Ends in a Tie

Afghanistan batted first in the Super Over and posted a competitive 17 runs. Azmatullah Omarzai played a crucial role, striking two boundaries and a six off Lungi Ngidi.

South Africa responded with David Miller and Dewald Brevis at the crease. Brevis hit a six but was dismissed on the next ball. Tristan Stubbs then stepped in and hit a boundary. With 7 runs required off the final ball, Stubbs launched a six to level the scores once again.

The match, refusing to settle, moved into a second Super Over — sealing its place as an unforgettable T20 World Cup spectacle.
