New Delhi: Iran avoided a surprise defeat in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match after battling back twice to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Tuesday. The result ensured Team Melli began their campaign with a point despite being pushed hard by the lower-ranked Oceania side.
Entering the tournament as clear favourites, Iran found themselves under pressure against a determined New Zealand team. The All Whites stunned their opponents by taking the lead on two occasions through forward Elijah Just, who scored both of his side's goals.
Iran, ranked significantly higher than New Zealand, struggled to control large parts of the contest but showed resilience when it mattered most. The result prevented what would have been one of the early upsets of the tournament.
Iran's first response came in the 32nd minute when Ramim Rezaeian produced a composed finish to level the score. The defender chipped the ball into the net with a clever touch, restoring parity after New Zealand's opening goal.
The All Whites regained the advantage later in the match, but Iran again found an answer. Rezaeian turned provider in the 64th minute, delivering a precise long ball that found Mohammad Mohebi. The forward made no mistake, finishing confidently to make it 2-2 and secure a valuable point for Team Melli.
Iran's draw added to an encouraging run for Asian Football Confederation (AFC) teams at the tournament. Earlier, Saudi Arabia held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw despite facing a side ranked considerably higher in world football.
Egypt also impressed by securing a 1-1 result against Belgium. Emam Ashour gave the Pharaohs an early lead before Belgium equalised through an own goal involving Mohamed Hany after pressure from Romelu Lukaku.
With South Korea and Australia winning their opening matches and Japan drawing against the Netherlands, AFC representatives remain unbeaten after five matches, highlighting the region's strong start to the FIFA World Cup 2026.
