On Sunday, PV Sindhu made history as she became the first Indian to win the Japan Open Super 750 title after coming out victorious against home favourite Akane Yamaguchi in straight games at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gyms. The two-time Olympic medalist offered one of her best performances in recent years to win 21-17, 21-17 and end a title drought that run since she won the Syed Modi International in 2024.
The victory marked Sindhu's first title at the Japan Open and her biggest triumph since she captured the BWF World Championships in Qatar in 2019. It also broke her four-year title-less streak against former world number-ones Yamaguchi (T1 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023) to send a clear signal that the Indian badminton star is back at her best.
PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the prestigious Japan Open Super 750 title after suffering from injuries and mixed form for the last two years. The 31-year-old came out with a statement performance by beating world number 3 Akane Yamaguchi on her home turf to dispel doubts over her return.

The victory in the Japan Open is not just another title. It is Sindhu's return to her best form after a painful period of injuries and a long trophy drought. By beating one of the best players in the world on her home ground, the former world champion is back and proving it to the world that she is a force to reckon with on the international badminton stage.
The historic success not only adds a coveted Super 750 title to Sindhu's trophy cabinet but also proves that India’s number one badminton star is back and ready to go for the sport’s biggest honours again.
