‘What’s the Difference?’ South Africa coach questions Messi decision while appealing themba zwane ban

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has criticised what he calls inconsistent officiating, questioning why Themba Zwane received a red card and three-match suspension while Lionel Messi escaped punishment for a similar incident during Argentina's World Cup opener.

New Delhi: South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has strongly defended midfielder Themba Zwane and announced that his team will appeal the red card and three-match suspension handed to the veteran player during their FIFA World Cup campaign opener against Mexico.

Broos also drew comparisons with an incident involving Argentina captain Lionel Messi during Argentina's opening match against Algeria, arguing that the two situations were treated differently by match officials.

Broos Questions Difference in Treatment

Speaking ahead of South Africa's next World Cup fixture, Broos said he was surprised by the severity of the punishment imposed on Zwane and questioned why Messi did not face similar scrutiny.

"I do not want Messi to get a red card because a player like him has to be on the pitch. We all know what a fantastic player he is. But what's the difference?" Broos said.

The South African coach argued that Zwane's dismissal was excessive and insisted the incident did not warrant either a red card or a lengthy suspension.

South Africa to Appeal Three-Match Ban

Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute of South Africa's 2-0 defeat to Mexico after a VAR review. The midfielder had only been on the pitch for 23 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Following the match, disciplinary authorities imposed a three-game suspension for violent conduct.

Broos revealed that he reviewed the footage with the player and remained convinced that the punishment was disproportionate.

"I watched the situation again with Themba and I don't think it was a red card. A three-match suspension is much too severe," he said.

Comparison With Messi Incident

The controversy intensified after Messi appeared to stamp on the back of Algeria defender Aissa Mandi's leg during Argentina's World Cup opener.

Broos pointed out that the incident involving Messi was not subjected to the same level of scrutiny and did not result in disciplinary action.

"When I compare it with what happened involving Messi, I certainly do not agree. There wasn't even a VAR review, while our incident was reviewed," he said.

Coach Defends Zwane's Actions

According to Broos, the Mexican defender was blocking Zwane's movement and preventing him from reaching the ball during South Africa's attack.

"The Mexican player wasn't looking at the ball. He was simply holding Themba. Themba tried to get past him and put his arm over the player's shoulder. For that, you get a red card and a three-match suspension? I'm sorry, but that's far too severe," the coach argued.

South Africa are now expected to formally challenge the suspension in the hope of having Zwane available for the remainder of the tournament.

The incident has reignited debate over consistency in refereeing decisions and the use of VAR at the FIFA World Cup.
