Visakhapatnam: The Indian women's cricket team suffered a thrilling 3-wicket defeat against Australia on Sunday, October 12, in the Women's ODI World Cup 2025. Openers Smriti Mandhana (80) and Pratik Raval (75) provided the team with a solid start, but the middle and lower-order batsmen failed to capitalize on that solid foundation.
India, after winning the toss and batting first, had scored 198 runs for just one wicket in 30 overs, thanks to a brilliant opening partnership of 155 runs between Mandhana and Raval. It seemed the team would post a total of around 350, but the batting order then completely collapsed. In the next 20 overs, India lost nine wickets for 138 runs, six of which fell for just 36 runs. The entire team was all out for 330 runs in 48.5 overs.

In response, Australian captain Alyssa Healy played an explosive innings of 142 runs off 107 balls, completely neutralizing the Indian bowling. Ellyse Perry (47 not out) and Ashleigh Gardner (45) also made significant contributions. Australia won the match by scoring 331 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the 49th over, achieving the target with six balls to spare.
After the match, captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that India could have batted better in the final overs. She said, "We could have added 30-40 more runs. We had a good start, but the runs didn't come in the final overs. The openers laid a great foundation, but we couldn't capitalize on it." She also said that the lower order, which had performed well in the first three matches, failed to live up to expectations this time.
This is India's second consecutive defeat in the tournament. They also lost to South Africa. Currently, India has two wins and two losses from four matches, and is in third place in the points table with four points. The team now has three remaining matches against England, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. To secure a place in the semi-finals, India must win at least two of these matches, otherwise it will have to depend on the performance of other teams.
