Neeraj Chopra could not recreate magic today
New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra’s dream of defending his ‘World Athletics Championship’ title came crashing down on Thursday in Tokyo. At the very Olympic Stadium where he had made history with a gold medal four years ago, the two-time Olympic medalist could not recreate the magic and had to settle for a disappointing eighth-place finish; a result that left fans stunned and heartbroken.
Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem both were eliminated in the 5th and fourth round respectively. However, India’s Sachin Yadav remains fourth and in the hunt for a medal.
First Throw Magic: Neeraj Chopra qualifies for World Athletics Championships
Chopra came in 8th spot with a best throw of 84.03 metres. Meanwhile, the reigning Olympics champion from Pakistan, Arshad Nadeem, could only manage a 10th spot with a best throw of 82.75m.
However, Indians had reason to celebrate as a new talent emerged. Sachin Yadav impressed with a stunning first throw, surpassing his personal best and ultimately finishing fourth, just shy of a podium finish. Remarkably, he recorded four throws better than Neeraj Chopra’s best of the day, with three surpassing his previous personal record.
The gold medal went to Keshorn Walcott, who became a world champion for the first time in his career, 13 years after his Olympic triumph in London. Anderson Peters secured the silver, while Curtis Thompson claimed the bronze.
