President awards 20 Nari Shakti Puraskars on International Women Day

New Delhi / 8 March 2016. President of India Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Nari Shakti Puraskar to 11 organizations and 9 individuals today at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in honor of International Women’s Day.

The Nari Shakti Puraskar is awarded to eminent organizations and women who have made significant contributions to women empowerment and to the overall cause of women. Each award is accompanied by a Certificate and Cash Award.

The nominations for the Nari Shakti Puraskar are sourced from the State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, concerned Central Ministries, Non-Governmental Organizations, Universities, Institutions, private and public sector undertakings (PSUs) working for empowerment of women.

Although earlier multiple awards such as Stree Shakti Puraskar would be conferred on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, has announced that from 2016 onwards “Nari Shakti Puraskar” will be the sole award presented to institutions/organizations and people across various categories on the occasion of International Women’s Day .
