He is a proud person who brought the principles of the Dravidian movement through stage plays. He entered the art world as a film actor and singer and gained popularity among the people. Even though he is gone, his memories will always be filled with our hearts. My tributes to Muthu Periappa.
In the 1970s, Muthu was initially considered Karunanidhi's political heir, but his career took a different path when he was introduced to Tamil cinema. The decision to introduce Muthu in films was seen as a strategic move by Karunanidhi to counter the growing popularity of M.G.R. (MGR), who had split from the DMK to form the AIADMK in 1972.
Muthu's first film was Pillaiyo Pillai
In the same year, Muthu made his acting debut with the film Pillaiyo Pillai, for which Karunanidhi himself wrote the screenplay. He later acted in several films, including Anaiya Villukku and Pookaari, but his stint in the film industry was short-lived. Despite initial success, Muthu was unable to replicate MGR's cinematic or political popularity and eventually retired from acting after acting in half a dozen films.
Muthu's personal life was fraught with challenges. His struggle with alcoholism affected his relationship with his father, which led to a great deal of public controversy. He later joined the AIADMK, embarrassing Karunanidhi, but his political career did not gain momentum. In 2009, after Muthu's health deteriorated, he reconciled with Karunanidhi.
