New Delhi: Indian AI startup Sarvam AI has launched its new Indus AI chat app. This app aims to directly challenge global AI platforms like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. The company claims that Indus is specifically designed for Indian users and offers text and voice support in 22 Indian languages.

Emphasis on Local Understanding and Data Security

The Indus app has been trained to better understand Indian contexts, idioms, and different accents. The company says its infrastructure is based in India, ensuring local data storage and security. Sarvam's focus is not limited to building a chatbot, but rather on building an India-centric AI ecosystem.

Based on a Powerful 105B Model

The app is built on the company's large language model with 105 billion parameters. Sarvam recently introduced the 105B and 30B models and is now rolling out the same technology to general users. The company is also working with HMD on AI integration in feature phones and with Bosch on developing solutions for the auto sector.

ChatGPT vs. Indus: Differences in Features

In terms of features, ChatGPT is considered a more mature and multimodal platform. It offers features like coding, professional writing, image generation, and file uploads. Indus, on the other hand, currently focuses on text and voice chat and doesn't offer image or document upload options. However, its strong presence in Indian languages makes it attractive to local users.

Pricing and Limitations

ChatGPT is available in a free plan, along with paid plans like GO (₹399) and Plus (₹1,999). Sarvam Indus, on the other hand, is currently completely free and in beta, allowing more people to try it. However, it has some limitations, such as the inability to delete individual chat history and a knowledge cutoff of June 2025.

Who's Best for It?

If your needs are limited to basic questions and local information in Indian languages, Indus might be a good option. However, for advanced research, multimodal tasks, and professional work, ChatGPT seems to be the best option.
