Cyber fraud are increasing day by day
New Delhi: Cyber fraud are increasing in day by day especially in National Capital Delhi. In the last four and a half years, online fraudsters have defrauded about Rs 1400 crore from people's bank accounts. This information was shared in a report presented in Parliament. In this report, the figure of cyber fraud in 2023 was around Rs 200 crore, which increased to more than Rs 800 crore in 2024.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai shared these shocking figures in Parliament. Cyber experts say that the police are unable to reach the big criminals and the recovery of the defrauded money is also limited. However, Delhi Police claims that the recovery rate is improving this year and as per the instructions of the Home Ministry, this rate can reach 20 to 25 percent.
In 2021, the police set up cyber police stations in all 15 districts to deal with cyber crimes. Despite the increase in police force and resources, immediate action is not possible in all cases due to shortage of staff. In the first six months of 2025, 184 cyber fraud cases were registered in Delhi, in which fraud of about Rs 71 crore took place. According to experts, despite the rapid increase in the number of cyber crimes, the registration of such low cases is a matter of concern.
To prevent cyber fraud, in June 2025, Home Minister Amit Shah launched the e-Zero FIR facility in Delhi. Under this, complaints lodged on the National Cyber Crime Portal or Helpline Number 1930 are directly converted into e-Zero FIR, which the victim can convert into a regular FIR within three days. This initiative is an important step to provide relief to cyber crime victims.
In the last 12 years, the financial loss caused by cyber fraud in Delhi has also increased continuously. In 2014, there was a fraud of only Rs 2.63 crore, which increased to Rs 817 crore in 2024. Amidst this increasing crime, the challenges of the police and the government are also increasing. Effective strategies and prompt action are needed to combat cybercrime to ensure the safety of the general public.
