New Delhi: WhatsApp is introducing a major update that allows users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their mobile numbers. The feature marks a shift in how users interact on the platform, aiming to improve privacy and reduce the need to expose personal contact details.

However, Meta has clarified that a phone number will still be required to create a WhatsApp account.

Government Raises Concerns Over Misuse

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has raised concerns over the potential misuse of the new feature in India. Officials warned that usernames could make it easier for individuals to impersonate others, including public figures, government agencies, and financial institutions.

The ministry has formally asked Meta to provide a detailed explanation of the feature within three days and has advised that the rollout should not proceed in India until consultations are completed.

Fear Of Impersonation And Online Fraud

Authorities have flagged risks such as phishing, identity spoofing, and fraudulent accounts. Concerns include the possibility of users creating usernames similar to trusted organisations or individuals, potentially misleading people online.

Officials believe the absence of a public username directory could still leave users vulnerable if malicious actors misuse similar-sounding identities.

How The Username System Will Work

Under the new system, users will be able to start chats using a username instead of a phone number. Usernames will be between three and 35 characters long.

To reduce impersonation risks, WhatsApp plans to reserve usernames linked to celebrities, public figures, and government bodies. The platform may also allow users to align their WhatsApp handles with those used on Instagram or Facebook for consistency.

Privacy Claims And Security Features

WhatsApp has stated that the feature is designed as a privacy enhancement. The company says there will be no public username directory or search suggestions, meaning users must know the exact username to initiate contact.

An optional “username key” feature is also being introduced, allowing users to restrict who can message them, adding another layer of protection against unwanted contacts.
