Why eSIM Adoption Is Slowing Down Globally

Despite its advantages, eSIM adoption remains slow globally due to low awareness and user hesitation. New data from South Korea, the US, and the UK shows physical SIM cards still dominate, raising doubts over earlier predictions about eSIM’s rapid growth.

New Delhi: There was a time when the eSIM was hailed as the future of mobile technology; however, the landscape now appears to be shifting. Despite the inherent advantages, people remain reluctant to abandon their traditional physical SIM cards.

According to recent reports, only 5% of mobile users in South Korea currently utilize eSIMs. Out of approximately 57 million users, a mere 3 million have switched to an eSIM. Although there was a slight uptick following a network-related scandal, a lack of awareness remains a major contributing factor.

A Different Trend in the United States

In contrast, approximately 38% of users in the United States are utilizing eSIMs—though for a different reason. Here, many smartphone models are released with eSIM-only support, leaving users with no alternative option.

The situation in the United Kingdom is even more intriguing. Nearly 40% of the population has never even heard of an eSIM, while 41% are unaware of whether their own devices support the technology.

Questioning the GSMA's Projections

In 2024, the GSMA projected that by 2028, 50% of all new mobile connections would be established via eSIMs, with that figure potentially reaching 88% by 2030. However, in light of current data, achieving these targets appears to be a formidable challenge.

While eSIM technology is undoubtedly modern and convenient, a lack of awareness and deeply ingrained user habits continue to pose significant obstacles to its widespread adoption. For the time being, physical SIM cards maintain their dominance, and it may take some time before eSIMs gain significant traction.
