New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an unconditional public apology over a controversial chapter in its Class 8 Social Science textbook “Exploring Society: India and Beyond” (Part II) and announced the withdrawal of the book from circulation.
In an official statement, NCERT said the textbook included Chapter IV titled “Role of the Judiciary in Our Society.” The council acknowledged that certain remarks in the chapter had sparked controversy and apologised for the content.
NCERT Director and members expressed regret over the issue and confirmed that the entire book has been withdrawn and will no longer be available in the public domain. The council also halted the distribution of the textbook and removed it from its official websites.
The council reiterated that it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, sensitivity, and responsibility in educational content.
The controversy centred on sections titled “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied” and “Corruption in the Judiciary,” which discussed the hierarchy of courts, judicial structures, and the issue of pending cases in the judiciary.
Meanwhile, senior advocate Kapil Sibal urged the Supreme Court of India to take up the matter suo motu. The plea was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi. The Chief Justice had earlier expressed strong displeasure over the issue.
