Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday described the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as a matter of serious concern and demanded strict action against anyone found responsible.
Her statement comes as Ayodhya Police and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Uttar Pradesh government continue their investigation into allegations related to the theft and misuse of temple donations.
Mayawati also cautioned political parties against turning the issue into a political controversy, saying that matters involving faith and public donations should be handled with responsibility.
In a post on social media, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said reports regarding alleged theft and misappropriation of offerings at the Shri Ram Temple were extremely concerning.
She said those involved should not be spared if found guilty, but added that politicising the matter would not be appropriate.
Mayawati suggested that a transparent accounting system similar to those used by other major temples in the country should be implemented to prevent such complaints in the future.
She further stated that the mixing of crime, politics and religion should be avoided, calling for a balance that aligns with constitutional principles.
So far, eight individuals associated with the counting of donation money have been arrested and sent to judicial custody in connection with the case.
The investigation has also raised questions about the functioning of temple administration, with demands from some quarters for action against senior officials involved in management.
Meanwhile, police questioned former Ram Temple Trust General Secretary Champat Rai for nearly three hours and recorded his statement. Investigators reportedly asked him about administrative decisions, donation handling procedures, employee responsibilities and complaints linked to the case.
According to sources, police may call him again if further clarification is required. Rai has reportedly stated that he had no involvement in the alleged donation theft.
Authorities are now comparing his statement with witness accounts, documents and other evidence collected during the investigation.
The SIT is expected to visit Ayodhya in early July to complete its inquiry and submit its final report to the government. Investigators are also reportedly examining financial details connected to certain trust members as part of the ongoing probe.
