Farmers in Raebareli are facing hardship as a canal built three years ago remains dry, with no irrigation benefits delivered. Around 90 farmers lost land and crops during construction but are yet to receive compensation.
Raebareli : Farmers are bearing the brunt of the negligence of administration and irrigation department in the rural areas of the district. About three years ago, Hilki Minor Canal was constructed with the aim of providing irrigation facilities to the farmers, but till today not a single drop of water has reached it.
About 90 farmers lost their land in the construction of this 4-5 km long canal. The farmers alleged that during the digging of the canal, their standing paddy crop was also destroyed by the JCB. At that time the contractor and officials had promised to give compensation for crop and land, but even after three years no one has received any payment.
Farmers have lodged complaints on district administration, irrigation department and Chief Minister's portal several times, but the problem has not been resolved yet. He says that the canal is dry and water is not reaching the fields, which is affecting the crops.
The farmers have warned that if the water in the canal is not released soon and compensation is not received, they will protest and if necessary, they will fill the canal and prepare their land back for cultivation.
