LV Antony Dev Kumar Promoted as Uttar Pradesh’s New Police Chief
Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the appointment of a Director General of Police (DG) after a gap of four years. 1994-batch IPS officer L.V. Antony Dev Kumar has been appointed as the state's new Director General of Police. Governor Anandiben Patel has approved his nomination. His promotion will be effective from 1 March.
According to order number 247/Chhapuse-2-2026 issued by the Home Department, L.V. Antony Dev Kumar has been promoted to Pay Matrix Level 16 (pay scale ₹2,05,400 to ₹2,24,400). The order, signed by Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Prasad, also clarifies that a separate order regarding his posting will be issued.
The state had been in a caretaker position for the post of Director General of Police since 2022. Now, after four years, the appointment of a permanent DG is expected to bring stability to the administrative system. Previously, IPS officer Rajiv Krishna served as acting DG, taking over the role after Prashant Kumar's retirement.
L.V. Antony Dev Kumar is originally from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree in political science and history. During his career, he has served as ADG, Rules and Manuals. He has also held important positions in the CBI, SSF, and Personnel Department.
In the coming days, Panchayat elections and several assembly by-elections are scheduled in Uttar Pradesh, which will present new administrative and law and order challenges. Maintaining peace and security in the state will be the primary responsibility of the new DG.
L.V. Antony Dev Kumar's term ends on May 28th upon reaching the age of 60. As such, the question of whether he will receive an extension remains a topic of debate. His appointment has ended the uncertainty surrounding the state police leadership.
