At least 15 students killed at coaching Centre fire in Lucknow (Img-X)
Lucknow: At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after a massive fire broke out at a coaching-cum-gaming zone on Usha Mehta Marg in Aliganj area on Monday, triggering a major rescue operation.
According to officials, 22 people were brought to King George’s Medical University (KGMU) after the incident. Of them, 15 were declared dead, while seven injured persons are undergoing treatment and are said to be in stable condition.
The blaze, which broke out in the afternoon, has been brought under control, but rescue and search operations are still underway. Several people were reportedly trapped inside the building when thick smoke engulfed the premises.
Rescue personnel used an adjacent building to enter the affected structure. Stretchers were taken inside through the adjoining premises, and a portion of a wall was breached to facilitate the movement of victims and rescue teams.
Visuals from the spot showed firefighters climbing the building with ladders and entering through nearby structures as teams continued efforts to search every room and washroom. Officials said the priority was to ensure that no one remained trapped inside.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath cancelled the remaining part of his scheduled visits to Aligarh and Hathras following the tragedy. He directed Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad and DGP Rajeev Krishna to immediately reach the spot, supervise relief and rescue operations, and submit a preliminary report.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said that some students were feared trapped inside the building and that rescue teams were conducting a room-by-room search. He added that hospitals and ambulances had been put on alert and all necessary arrangements were being made for the treatment of the injured.
Heavy police force was deployed around the area as senior police, fire and administrative officials remained at the spot to monitor the rescue work. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and authorities are expected to investigate possible lapses after the rescue operation is completed.
