Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay's Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has expelled a senior party functionary after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed him accepting a bribe of ₹1.30 lakh from a contractor.

The disciplinary action comes just days after Vijay publicly declared that corruption and abuse of power would not be tolerated in his party or government.

Party removes leader with immediate effect

TVK removed Veerasamy, the Chengalpattu East district joint secretary and Mambakkam Panchayat Union chairman, from the party's primary membership and stripped him of all organisational responsibilities with immediate effect.

In a disciplinary order issued by Chengalpattu East district secretary C.V. Dinakaran, the party said the action was taken because Veerasamy had allegedly acted in a manner that brought disrepute to the organisation.

Viral video sparks controversy

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing Veerasamy accepting ₹1.30 lakh from a contractor.

The video's authenticity has not been independently verified, but it quickly drew political attention after Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran shared the clip on social media while criticising TVK over its anti-corruption claims.

Accused arrested

Following the controversy, Veerasamy was arrested in Chengalpattu in connection with allegations of extorting ₹1.30 lakh. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the investigation.

Action follows Vijay's anti-corruption message

The disciplinary action comes shortly after Vijay addressed a public rally in Karur, where he asserted that individuals involved in corruption, bribery or misuse of authority would face strict action.

The party's decision to expel Veerasamy is being viewed as an attempt to reinforce that public position.

Tamil Nadu government strengthens anti-corruption measures

Separately, the Tamil Nadu government has directed all government offices, public sector undertakings and local bodies to install bilingual anti-corruption notice boards.

The notices will display the message "Bribe giving and receiving is an offence" along with contact details and a dedicated WhatsApp number of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to encourage citizens to report corruption.

Departments have also been instructed to display the same anti-corruption message on their official websites with a direct link to the DVAC portal.
