New Delhi: As Bihar prepares for its upcoming assembly elections, the Opposition alliance, Mahagathbandhan, is reported to have reached a consensus on a comprehensive seat-sharing arrangement. This development marks a significant step in the coalition’s electoral strategy, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) likely to emerge as the principal stakeholder.

The proposed formula is expected to solidify Tejashwi Yadav’s leadership within the alliance and set the tone for a unified campaign against the ruling NDA. An official announcement is anticipated shortly.

Bihar Elections 2025: NDA vs INDIA bloc- Who is likely to win the high-stakes battle?

RJD to Contest 130 Seats, Congress Likely to Get 50

Reports suggest that the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Tejashwi Yadav, will contest around 130 assembly seats, making it the dominant force within the alliance. The Congress, after initial negotiations demanding over 70 seats, is now expected to settle for 50 constituencies.

This division is seen as a strategic compromise aimed at maintaining unity in the Opposition bloc while acknowledging the RJD's stronger grassroots presence across the state. The Congress, which won around 19 seats in the previous election with a nearly 9% vote share, had initially pushed for a larger slice but appears to have scaled back expectations.

Left Parties Likely to Field Candidates in 35 Seats

The Left bloc, comprising CPI(ML), CPI, and CPI(M), is expected to contest a combined total of 35 seats. The CPI(ML), buoyed by its strong performance in the last assembly election, may get the largest share among the three, with around 20 seats.

The Left is expected to field influential candidates in key regions like Seemanchal, Magadh, and Tirhut, where it holds pockets of influence, especially among workers and agrarian communities.

VIP, JMM and LJP (RV) Also in Alliance Fold

Former NDA ally Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) is now firmly in the Mahagathbandhan camp and is expected to be allotted 20 seats, primarily in areas with a sizable Nishad voter base.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) may contest six seats, particularly in constituencies along the Jharkhand border and in the Seemanchal region. Additionally, Pashupati Kumar Paras’s LJP (RV) faction could receive two seats, marking a small but strategic presence in the alliance.

Tejashwi Yadav Poised as CM Face of the Alliance

With the RJD contesting the most seats, Tejashwi Yadav is expected to be projected as the chief ministerial face of the Mahagathbandhan once again. Political observers believe this move aims to create a clear leadership narrative for the alliance and rally the youth vote, especially with RJD’s repeated promise of 1 million government jobs forming a key campaign plank.

Election Narrative: "Jobs vs Claims"

The Mahagathbandhan appears set to frame its campaign around the theme of “jobs versus claims,” contrasting their employment-focused promises with the ruling NDA’s track record.

While the RJD will highlight its 10 lakh jobs promise, the Congress is expected to focus on unemployment, women's safety, and education. The Left parties will emphasise worker rights, agrarian issues, and rural welfare.
