New Delhi: Sergio Gor, nominated by former US President Donald Trump for the post of ambassador to India, has made an important statement in which he clearly stated that America's priority will be to distance India from China and bring it closer to itself. He said this during his confirmation hearing in the Senate.

India-US relations are improving

Sergio Gor admitted that recently there have been some "obstacles" or "hiccups" in the relations between India and America, but he assured that both countries will overcome them soon.

“PM Modi is my good friend and remain so,” says Donald Trump

Comparing India-US relations with India-China relations, he said: "Our relations with the Indian government and the people are decades old and deep, which are much better and warmer than their relations with China."

America's strategy regarding China

Expressing concern about Chinese expansionism, Gore said that China is expanding not only on India's border but in the entire region. Therefore, America will try to make India a strong partner by keeping it away from China's influence. "Our top priority will be to pull India away from China and bring it with America."

Trade agreement soon

Sergio Gore said that trade talks between India and America have now reached the final stage. He said: "We are negotiating the 'nitty-gritty' (fine points) of the trade agreement, and very soon we can reach a conclusion."

The Trump government also wants the Indian market to be opened for American crude oil, petroleum products, and LNG. Gore described India's middle class population as bigger than America's and called the potential of this market important.

Friendly relationship between Trump and Modi

Recently, there was some bitterness in the relations between the two countries due to the US imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods and buying oil from Russia. But Trump himself reacted to this by saying that he will always be a friend of Prime Minister Modi, to which Modi also reiterated the same sentiments in response.

India described as a strategic partner

Sergio Gor described India as a "strategic partner" and the "foundation of regional stability." He said that the US is ready to work together with India and considered India-US relations as one of the most important relationships in the world.

It is clear from Sergio Gor's statements that the US is looking at India as a reliable and long-term ally. Amid China's increasing aggression, this policy of the US can also be strategically beneficial for India. Now it remains to be seen how much this relationship will be strengthened by the upcoming trade agreement and diplomatic initiatives.
