Pilibhit: A police constable in Pilibhit district has filed a complaint alleging she was sexually assaulted by her brother-in-law and repeatedly harassed by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. The complaint, lodged on October 5, 2025, has prompted multiple police cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Alleged Assault and Legal Action

The victim claimed that she was sexually assaulted by her brother-in-law in Meerut. The case has been registered under sections 64 (punishment for rape), 74 (assault or use of criminal force to outrage modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace).

The constable alleged that her ordeal started in September 2024, when she discovered her husband and sister-in-law in an inappropriate situation. On confronting them, she claims her in-laws assaulted her and attempted to harm her, including forcing her to ingest harmful substances, which led to hospitalization.

Dowry-Related Harassment

The woman was married on January 26, 2023, to a resident of Meerut, with her family reportedly spending around ₹50 lakh on the wedding, including a car, gold, silver, and other gifts. Despite this, her in-laws allegedly demanded additional possessions, including a luxury SUV.

She further alleged that in July 2023, her husband and father-in-law pressured her to take medication to conceive a male child, which she refused. The complaint states that her in-laws later traveled to Pilibhit with the intention to attack her.

Spent 50 lakh on wedding, in-laws not happy with dowry’

The complainant, who married a resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, on January 26, 2023, stated that her family spent nearly ₹50 lakh on the wedding, including a car, gold, silver, and other valuables for her in-laws. Despite this, she alleged that her in-laws were dissatisfied and demanded a Scorpio SUV, criticizing the gifts they had already received as insufficient or of poor quality. When she informed them she could not fulfill these demands, the complainant claimed she faced verbal abuse from her in-laws.

She further alleged that in July 2023, her husband and father-in-law tried to force her to take medication to conceive a male child. Upon her refusal, they reportedly came to Pilibhit with the intention to harm her.

Multiple FIRs Registered

In addition to the Kharkhauda police station case regarding the sexual assault, another FIR was lodged at Bisalpur police station against her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. 

 According to police, the case was registered under several relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act including sections 85 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (criminal intimidation) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).
