A surviving worker reported the incident
The Indian Army has launched a massive search and rescue operation in the Chaglagam area of Arunachal Pradesh. The operation was initiated late Wednesday night based on information about a vehicle accident near kilometer 40 on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road.
The sole survivor, who managed to reach the Chipra GREF camp, reported that the truck carrying 22 workers fell into a ravine on the night of December 8. The accident site, located about 12 kilometers east of Chaglagam, is in a very remote area, and due to limited connectivity, local agencies, contractors, or civilian representatives were unable to report the incident.
Defense Ministry spokesperson in Guwahati, Lieutenant Colonel MS Rawat, said that on Thursday, the Spear Corps dispatched several search and rescue teams, medical teams, GREF representatives, local police, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and ADC Hayuliang to the scene. After nearly four hours of searching and descending using ropes, the truck was located at 11:55 a.m., approximately 200 meters below the road, with great difficulty due to dense forest and foliage. So far, 18 bodies have been located and are being retrieved using the bail-rope technique. ADC Hayuliang informed SP Anjaw, who has reached the spot, while the District Medical Officer is also on his way to assist in the evacuation of the injured and the dead.
The SDRF team called in by the district administration is also on its way. ADC Hayuliang is verifying the actual number of workers and their whereabouts from the sub-contractor of the Zila Parishad Member of Chaglagam.
Despite harsh geographical conditions and poor visibility, the Army, civil administration, and various agencies are making concerted efforts to search for the remaining people and provide immediate assistance.
