Man in Black Mask Identified as Umar Mohammad
New Delhi: A massive explosion occurred in a white Hyundai i20 car near the Red Fort on Monday evening at around 6:52 p.m., creating panic in the entire area. The explosion was so powerful that it set nearby parked vehicles on fire and caused a stampede on the road. Nine people were killed and 24 injured. Police and security agencies are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.
CCTV footage from shortly before the explosion shows a white i20 car leaving the parking lot. A man wearing a black mask is visible inside the car. Investigating agencies suspect this person is Dr. Umar Mohammed, who was allegedly part of the Faridabad module and had been absconding for several days.
Delhi Red Fort Blast: DN ENC Manoj Tibrewal shares key details; Was this a part of a larger threat?
Initial investigations by Delhi Police have revealed that Umar remained seated in the car for approximately three hours but did not get out for even a minute. Agencies believe he was waiting for instructions or orders about when and where to detonate.
After this blast, agencies now believe the Faridabad module has the strongest link. A few days ago, the Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted an operation from Faridabad in Haryana to Lucknow, seizing approximately 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate. Now, suspicions are growing that the Red Fort blast was part of a conspiracy by the same network.
The car used in the blast was an i20 with a Haryana registration number. Police have detained the vehicle owner, Salman. Initial investigations have revealed that the car had changed hands several times—first sold by Salman, then to a man named Devendra, and then to Tariq, a resident of Pulwama.
A body was recovered from the car after the blast. Police are now conducting a DNA test to confirm whether the body is that of Dr. Umar Mohammad.
Delhi Blast Raises Questions Ahead of Bihar Voting; High Alert in Several Cities
Delhi Police has registered an FIR under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The NIA, NSG, Delhi Police, and other investigative agencies are jointly investigating the attack.
Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the incident and said, "A thorough investigation is being conducted on all aspects; the culprits will not be spared under any circumstances."
This blast near the Red Fort raises serious questions about the security situation in the country's capital. The manner in which the suspect, Umar, spent hours in his car planning the blast clearly indicates that this attack was a pre-planned terrorist plot. Police are currently investigating DNA reports and digital traces. In the coming days, it will become clear who was behind this entire network.
