Why did the NIA court hold a special hearing inside its own headquarters and what makes the Anmol Bishnoi case so sensitive? His custody has now been extended by seven days, deepening the probe into alleged overseas operations and terror links tied to the Bishnoi syndicate.
NIA court extends Anmol Bishnoi’s custody
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) court at Patiala House has extended the custody of Anmol Bishnoi brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi by seven more days. The decision was taken during a high-security hearing held inside the NIA headquarters, reflecting the sensitivity and potential threat perception surrounding the case.
Anmol Bishnoi was recently deported from the United States for overstaying illegally. Upon his arrival in India, he was taken into custody by the NIA based on pending criminal charges.
The agency alleges that Anmol has long been an active contributor to the Bishnoi syndicate, operating from abroad after fleeing India in 2022. Authorities further revealed that proceedings are underway to declare him a proclaimed offender.

Anmol had also filed a plea expressing concerns regarding threats to his life. Citing the risks involved, security was significantly scaled up for the hearing.
In an unusual move, Special NIA Judge Prashant Sharma travelled to the NIA headquarters to conduct the remand hearing rather than holding it inside the Patiala House court complex. Sources indicate that the step was taken purely due to security concerns and the high-profile nature of the accused.
During the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Rahul Tyagi sought an additional 10-day remand to continue investigations. Defence advocates Rajni and Deepak Khatri opposed the request, arguing that the agency had already had considerable time with the accused.
After considering both sides, the court extended custody for seven more days shorter than the duration sought by the NIA.

The NIA claims Anmol played a crucial role in the Lawrence Bishnoi-led terror syndicate and actively supported designated terrorist Goldy Brar. He allegedly coordinated extortion rackets, ordered hits, and managed finances for the network between 2020 and 2023.
Despite living in the US prior to deportation, Anmol allegedly maintained close contact with gang members and was instrumental in running operations from overseas. His arrest marks the 19th made in connection with this terror module.
With custody extended, the NIA is expected to further probe international links, financial trails, and operational strategies of the Bishnoi network in the coming week.
