Shillong: The Meghalaya government has approached the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya last year.

The apex court has agreed to hear the matter on Friday after the state sought an urgent listing.

State Questions High Court's Bail Order

The matter was mentioned before a bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Sheel Nagu by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Representing the Meghalaya government, Mehta argued that the High Court had erred in granting bail based on what he described as a typographical error in the arrest documents.

According to the state, the procedural lapse cited by the High Court was minor and should not have outweighed the seriousness of the allegations. The government also expressed concern that Sonam could evade the legal process if allowed to remain on bail.

Victim's Family Also Plans Legal Challenge

Raja Raghuvanshi's family has also decided to challenge the bail order before the Supreme Court. His elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, said the family was dissatisfied with the handling of the case and would continue its legal fight to seek cancellation of Sonam's bail.

Case Background

The case stems from the death of Raja Raghuvanshi, who had travelled to Meghalaya with his wife for their honeymoon in May 2025. The couple went missing while visiting Sohra, and Raja's body was later recovered from a deep gorge on June 2.

Investigators have alleged that Sonam conspired with hired assailants to kill her husband, claiming the murder was planned for financial gain. The Meghalaya High Court upheld a trial court's decision granting her bail on June 29, prompting the state government to move the Supreme Court.
