The highest number of dowry cases are reported in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Uttar Pradesh alone recorded 11,874 dowry death cases. This means that, on average, 20 women are sacrificed to dowry every day. Watch an exclusive analysis by veteran journalist Manoj Tibrewal Aakash
New Delhi: It is not just a tragedy for one family but a mirror to our entire society. The question is, in what direction is our society moving, where a husband can mercilessly kill his own wife?
Senior journalist Manoj Tibrewal Aakash said in his special show 'The MTA Speaks,' "Marriage, which is considered a sacred bond between two souls—how does it become a cause of death for someone?" A girl who leaves her parents' home, her childhood, and her world to come to her husband's house could never have imagined in her dreams that the same life partner would one day take her life.
This is not just the story of Nikki Payla, but the reality of thousands of girls who are sacrificed at the altar of dowry. The incident involving Nikki Payla in Greater Noida has shaken the entire area. According to information, Nikki Payla, a resident of Sirsa village, was married to Vipin Bhati in 2016.
A Scorpio car was given as a dowry in the marriage, but despite this, the demands of the husband and his family never ended. From time to time, additional dowry demands of 35 lakh rupees were made.
The victim's family even gave another car to try to save the relationship, but the harassment did not stop. The husband, Vipin; brother-in-law, Rohit; mother-in-law, Daya; and father-in-law, Satveer, continuously tormented Nikki.
What happened on the night of August 21 shook society. First, Nikki was brutally beaten. Her hair was pulled, she was severely assaulted, and then thinner was poured on her and she was set on fire.
A video of this also surfaced, showing her screams and agony. The sight of Nikki, engulfed in flames while coming down the stairs, is enough to shake anyone to the core. The statement given by Nikki's innocent son further revealed the truth of this crime.
The child clearly said, "Papa set Mama on fire with a lighter." This video went viral on social media, and outrage spread across the country.
After this incident, public anger spilled onto the streets. Relatives from Nikki's native village and hundreds of villagers gathered at Kasana police station and sat in protest.
They surrounded the police station and demanded the encounter of the accused. After three days of anger, protests, and road blockades, the police finally took action and arrested the accused husband, Vipin. The question also arises: would the police have acted so quickly without public pressure?
Vipin Bhati's extravagant and deceitful face is now slowly coming to light. An old video has gone viral on social media in which Vipin was caught in a Wagon-R car with another girl.
This video is said to be from 2024. Nikki's brother, Atul, has stated that Vipin had illicit relationships with other girls, and whenever Nikki objected, she was brutally beaten.
Meanwhile, after being caught, Vipin tried to escape from police custody. The police were taking him to recover the thinner bottle when he tried to snatch an officer's pistol and flee.
In the ensuing encounter, he was shot in the leg and arrested. The police claim that this action was taken because he tried to escape, but people are questioning why the police delayed action and only acted after public outrage.
Nikki's sister, Kanchan, was also married into the same family. She was married to Rohit, while Nikki was married to Vipin. Both sisters faced continuous harassment. Several panchayats were called, but the in-laws never relented. Ultimately, Nikki lost her life.
After the incident, the police registered a case against the husband, Vipin; brother-in-law, Rohit; mother-in-law, Daya; and father-in-law, Satveer, based on the complaint filed by Nikki's sister.
ADCP Sudhir Kumar stated that swift action is being taken in the case. Vipin has been arrested, and a search for the other accused is underway. The question also arises: how did the other accused manage to flee, and why did the police remain inactive for so long?
Meanwhile, another dramatic and vile face of the accused husband, Vipin, emerged when he posted on social media with the intention of misleading people, claiming that Nikki had committed suicide. He tried to show that he was shattered after losing his wife. However, the truth is that she was burnt to death, and there is video evidence of this.
This incident has emerged as another horrifying example of dowry practices and violence against women in India. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that cases of dowry deaths are registered in large numbers across the country every year.
The highest number of such cases are reported in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Uttar Pradesh alone recorded 11,874 dowry death cases. This means that, on average, 20 women are sacrificed to dowry every day.
The statistics are not just frightening but horrifying. Between 2017 and 2021, 35,493 women died due to dowry-related murders across the country. These are not just numbers; they represent the shattered lives of families whose daughters, sisters, and wives fell victim to this evil practice.
The question that should arise in everyone's mind today is, when will these incidents stop? Is the cause a lack of education? Is it arrogance and ego? Or is it the confidence that one can escape the law and the police?
Nikki Payla's death forces us to think that if this mindset of dowry and violence against women is not eradicated from society, such tragedies will only increase in the future. We must eliminate this evil practice from our society.
The youth must come forward to promote dowry-free marriages. The law must be made stricter, and the police must become more sensitive and accountable.
Nikki Payla is not just a name; she is the voice of thousands of daughters in this country who have been burnt in the fire of dowry. Her death is a tough question for both society and the system. This fight is not just for Nikki's family but for every citizen who wants India to become a safe and just society.
