Three policemen suspended in Gurugram after a video of them taking a bribe from a Japanese tourist goes viral
Gurugram: Three traffic policemen in Gurugram have been suspended after a video went viral on social media in which they were seen taking a bribe of ₹1,000 in cash from a Japanese tourist. The incident has raised questions over the image of the police and India's international reputation.
In the video, a woman is seen riding a scooter wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider is without a helmet. A police officer tells them that a ₹1,000 "fine" will be imposed for riding without a helmet. The officer says, "Would you like to pay here or in court?" When the tourist asked, "Can I pay with Visa or Touch?" (referring to contactless cards), the policeman said, "No Visa Touch." The tourist then gave two ₹500 notes, which the policemen took without giving a receipt.
According to traffic rules in India, there is a fine of ₹1,000 for the pillion rider not wearing a helmet. This fine should be paid through digital means such as transport apps or portals. If a person wants to pay the fine on the spot, the policeman has to provide a POS machine or UPI facility or give an e-challan receipt. But in this case, neither a receipt nor the option of digital payment was given.
A user named @deadlykalesh posted this video on Twitter (now X), which was viewed more than 1.87 lakh times. The user wrote, "Gurugram Police took a bribe of ₹1,000 from a Japanese tourist without any receipt. These people are spoiling the image of India internationally."

After enduring such humiliation in front of those people whom we admire for their honesty, netizens have also reacted strongly by making the following strong demands from the government:
“Body cams should be mandatory for every on-duty policeman.”
“There should be direct termination, not suspension.”
“Police reform is needed.”
“Action is taken only after the matter comes on social media.”
Gurugram Police released an official statement on social media saying, “Zero tolerance against corruption. Immediate action has been taken after the video of misbehavior of traffic staff went viral.”
