The controversy surrounding cough syrup in Uttar Pradesh has not yet subsided. The Dynamite News team visited Mainpuri and surveyed the city's medical stores. It was found that the syrups being sold without bills were the ones that were suspected of being counterfeit or substandard. Syrups sold with proper bills were considered legitimate.
In Varanasi, Shubham Jaiswal was found with crores of rupees in cash and a large quantity of cough syrup. The investigation revealed that the syrup in his possession contained alcohol in excess of the prescribed limit. This syrup led to misuse by many people, resulting in addiction.
The government has completely banned the sale of codeine-based cough syrup. Codeine syrup will no longer be sold at any shop. Medical stores in Uttar Pradesh have also started complying with this ban.
