New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given a clean chit to filmmaker Aditya Dhar’s upcoming spy-action thriller Dhurandhar, after conducting a fresh review ordered by the Delhi High Court.

The parents of Ashoka Chakra awardee Late Major Mohit Sharma had approached the Court seeking an urgent stay on the film’s release, alleging that the movie appeared to draw directly from their son’s life and heroic military operations.

Fresh CBFC Examination Finds ‘No Link’ to Major Sharma

Following the High Court’s directive on December 1, the CBFC re-examined the film in light of the specific allegations raised by the family. In its latest communication, the Board categorically stated that Dhurandhar neither resembles nor references any aspect of Major Sharma’s life, service record, personal experiences or undercover missions.

Officials noted that the film carries a clear disclaimer stating that all characters and events are entirely fictional. The second round of scrutiny was centred on one question posed by the Court whether the film directly or indirectly depicts Major Sharma. The Board concluded that the answer is an unequivocal “no.”

Court Observations and Filmmaker’s Clarification

During the earlier hearing, Justice Sachin Datta had questioned the basis of the family’s claims, observing that only the trailer was available and no substantive evidence had been presented to establish resemblance with Major Sharma. The Court had therefore disposed of the petition while directing the CBFC to examine the objections before certification.

Filmmaker Aditya Dhar had also issued a public clarification on X (formerly Twitter) on November 26, stating that Dhurandhar is not based on the Ashoka Chakra awardee. He assured that if a biopic on Major Sharma is ever made, it would only be done with full consent and involvement of the family.

No Need for Army Consultation, Says CBFC

Counsel for CBFC, Advocate Ashish Dixit, informed the Court that the certification process was still underway and the objections were being reviewed. The Court had permitted the Board to consult the Indian Army if necessary. However, CBFC has now stated that such consultation is not required since the film does not portray any real Army officer or actual military operation.

The Board also reiterated that its Examining Committee had already viewed the film on November 28 and found it suitable for an ‘A’ certificate after minor cuts. The reassessment did not alter this conclusion.

Film Set for December 5 Release

With the objections dismissed and the certification process back on track, Dhurandhar is set for release on December 5. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan and Arjun Rampal, and is billed as a high-octane Hindi spy-action thriller.
