Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ sees box office surge, nears Rs 257 Cr but budget looms large

Despite a strong second Sunday (₹10.75 Cr), ‘Coolie’s’ 11-day total is ₹256.75 Cr. Facing a hefty ₹350 Cr budget, the film must sustain momentum to reach the ‘hit’ threshold, a challenging target from its current 70% recovery.

New Delhi: Superstar Rajinikanth's latest film, 'Coolie,' has had a bumpy ride at the box office. The film was released in theaters on August 14, as part of Rajinikanth's 50th year celebrations of his film career.

The film broke several records by making massive collections on its first extended weekend. However, the collections saw a significant drop in the following weekends, raising a wave of concern. But the film picked up its pace once again on the second weekend and recorded a jump in its collections.

On the 11th day of the film, i.e., the second Sunday after its release, 'Coolie' collected around Rs 10.75 crore. With this positive performance, the total 11-day collection of the film has touched the figure of Rs 256.75 crore.

This growth is especially significant as the film had earlier seen a drop of around 5% on the 9th day (Friday) and managed to collect just Rs 5.85 crore. But on the 10th day (Saturday), it saw a massive rise of around 80% and earned Rs 10.5 crore.

However, despite these figures, the film still has a long way to go compared to its hefty budget. As per reports, the production budget of 'Coolie' is around Rs 350 crore (excluding print and advertising costs). With a total collection of Rs 256.75 crore, the film has recovered only around 70% of its cost so far.

To be declared a 'hit' at the box office, the film needs to make a net collection of at least Rs 350 crore. Experts believe that given the current momentum, the film is likely to cross the Rs 300 crore mark, but achieving the target of 350 crores now seems to be a huge challenge.

'Coolie' is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and is an action thriller. It stars Rajinikanth along with actors like Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj in lead roles.

The story of the film revolves around a former union leader, Deva (Rajinikanth), who tries to find out the mysterious death of his friend, and in the process, he encounters dangerous gangsters. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music for the film.
