According to the Dynamite News correspondent, heart attack is often considered a health problem related to the elderly, but this case shows that serious heart-related conditions can also occur in young children. Even though these incidents are rare, timely identification of symptoms and proper treatment can save lives.

Possible causes of heart attack in children

Heart attack in children is usually caused by congenital heart defects. This condition occurs when the structure or functioning of the heart is abnormal from birth. Apart from this, viral infection can also cause myocarditis i.e. inflammation of the heart muscles, Kawasaki disease causing inflammation of the blood vessels or genetic conditions. In some cases, heart attack can also occur due to reasons like serious injury to the chest during sports, blood clotting disorder or uncontrolled heartbeat (arrhythmia).

How to identify the symptoms

Small children are not able to tell their problems in clear words, but some symptoms like chest pain while playing, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, sudden fatigue, blue or dull color especially in lips and nails can indicate. Irritability, lack of appetite and not gaining weight in infants can also be signs.

Preventive measures and necessary steps

If the child suddenly becomes unconscious or stops breathing, seek medical help immediately. Giving CPR and using Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be effective in saving lives. It is important to train the staff for such emergencies in sports and schools.
