New Delhi: The US President’s fascist tendencies have complicated global geopolitics and the international situation. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Moros’ downfall and arrest by the US have further destabilized the world order.

Countries worldwide are now trying to realign and build new bridges with their neighbors. In this context, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is on a four-day visit to China.

Seoul–Beijing Engagement Enters a New Phase

President Lee Jae Myung’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is being viewed as the beginning of a “new phase” in South Korea–China relations.

Lee has emphasized regional security and called for lifting Beijing’s unofficial ban on Korean pop culture. Xi, meanwhile, is keen to strengthen ties with Seoul amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between China and Japan.

Balancing Between Major Powers

South Korea continues its diplomatic tightrope walk between the US, Japan, and China. While South Korea and Japan are US security allies, Seoul relies heavily on China for trade. During Lee’s visit, several cooperation agreements covering trade, environment, and technology were signed by officials and companies from both countries.

China, North Korea, and Regional Stability

China must also maintain a balance between North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s Lee Jae Myung. Beijing remains one of Pyongyang’s strongest economic, military, and diplomatic supporters.

South Korea wants China to use its influence to pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program, as missile and hypersonic missile tests continue to threaten regional stability.

Challenges Ahead for Diplomacy

The success of talks will depend on how effectively Lee convinces China on the North Korea issue. Despite China’s stated willingness to restore peace on the Korean Peninsula, it remains uncertain how Xi might recalibrate Beijing’s traditional friendship with Pyongyang.

South Korea, meanwhile, cannot easily distance itself from Japan and the US to side with China.

While differences between South Korea and China remain, Lee Jae Myung’s visit represents a new starting point for rebuilding trust across diplomatic, economic, environmental, and cultural dimensions.
