The fire is described as “unusual” by Secretary for Security Chris Tang, who explained that exterior materials like protective netting, fire-resistant cloth, and plastic sheeting burned far more intensely than expected, helping the fire spread quickly.

Hong Kong: A massive fire at the Wang Fuk Court high-rise complex in Tai Po, Hong Kong, believed to be the city’s worst in decades, continues to burn as rescue operations struggle to reach trapped residents. The death toll has climbed to 44, including a firefighter, while almost 300 people remain missing.

The blaze has been contained in four of the buildings, but smoke continues to rise from three others as firefighters and rescue teams work tirelessly to save those trapped on the upper floors. Thick smoke and extreme heat are making the operation dangerous and difficult. Deputy Fire Services Director Derek Chan said falling debris and scaffolding add further risks to frontline personnel.

Authorities have arrested three people on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the fire. Reports suggest the blaze may have started due to unsafe scaffolding and foam materials used during maintenance work. Windows on a nearby unaffected building were found sealed with foam, installed by a construction company, raising questions of gross negligence. Eileen Chung, a Hong Kong police superintendent, said the company’s actions contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and the high number of casualties.

The fire is described as “unusual” by Secretary for Security Chris Tang, who explained that exterior materials like protective netting, fire-resistant cloth, and plastic sheeting burned far more intensely than expected, helping the fire spread quickly.

The Wang Fuk Court complex houses around 5,000 residents, most of whom were trapped on the upper floors when the fire broke out. Emergency services have been working around the clock, but the scale and intensity of the blaze continue to pose challenges.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed condolences to the victims, including the firefighter who died in the line of duty. He urged Hong Kong authorities and rescue workers to “make every effort” to extinguish the fire and save those still trapped.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over building safety and fire prevention measures, with authorities promising a thorough investigation into the causes and responsibility for the tragic fire.
